Map of Artemis ROADS III Student Teams

For the 2024–2025 challenge, we developed eight Mission Objectives (MO) inspired by the NASA Artemis program! Teams documented their progress in a Mission Development Log and submitted materials to NESSP for team recognition. Artemis ROADS III is an excellent team activity for in-class projects, robotics, programming, clubs, Scout troops, and other community organizations.

STEM Concepts
All activities aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and helped students build skills in:

  • Earth and space science (Earth–Moon system and water)
  • Life science and agriculture (growing food for astronauts)
  • Engineering and design (rockets, rovers, and surface systems)
  • Robotics and computer programming
  • Scientific modeling, testing, and data collection
  • Exploring NASA careers and STEM pathways
  • Teamwork, documentation, and communication
Challenge Activities
Teams completed Artemis-themed mission Mission Objectives:

  • Document work in Science & Engineering Notebooks and a Mission Development Log
  • Design a mission patch representing their team
  • Model the water cycle and build a water purification device for lunar explorers
  • Plan ways to grow food on the Moon
  • Program a rover to explore a lunar lava tube
  • Design, build, and test a rocket and crew capsule landing system
  • Research NASA careers and envision their own future STEM role
  • Present their final mission results
