Map of Artemis ROADS Student Teams (2022–2023)

Our ROADS program (Rover Observation And Drone Survey) is a framework that lets students explore STEM concepts through hands-on activities inspired by real NASA missions. Each year we update ROADS to tackle new science and engineering challenges and to explore different destinations across the solar system. For the 2022–2023 Artemis ROADS Challenge, we returned to the Moon!

STEM Concepts
All activities aligned with NGSS and helped students build skills in:

  • Earth and space science
  • Life science and plant growth
  • Engineering and design
  • Robotics and basic programming
  • Scientific observation and modeling
  • Mission planning and documentation
  • Understanding human needs in space
Challenge Activities
Teams completed hands-on Artemis-themed mission tasks:

  • Create mission documentation
  • Observe the changing Moon from Earth
  • Investigate the lunar south pole
  • Design a plant experiment for a closed spacecraft
  • Reflect on items that help astronauts feel connected to home
  • Use engineering design to build a lunar rover wheel
  • Operate a drone to simulate the Artemis trajectory
  • Design and test a robot to navigate lunar terrain
