Who is eligible?

We are looking for college-bound students residing in Oregon or Washington state who will enter 9th or 10th grade  (14 to 15 year-olds) in the upcoming Fall academic year and have a strong interest in science, engineering, and math.  We will consider all applicants, but preference will be given to low-income or underrepresented minorities.

How much does the Explore Mars Academy cost?

The Explore Mars Academy is free, including materials, overnight accommodations, and food. We do not provide transportation to and from the Explore Mars Academy.

When is the Explore Mars Academy?

The Explore Mars Academy runs for a week during mid-summer. Participants check in on Sunday and are picked up following the completion ceremony on Friday afternoon.

Where will students stay?

Students will stay in dorms on the Central Washington University campus in Ellensburg, Washington.  Most of the activities will also take place on campus; however, students will also go on a geology field trip and to the Museum of Flight in Seattle.  We require all participants to stay on campus even if they live nearby. Students will eat in the dining halls on campus.

What will the students be doing?

Students will be doing a variety of structured educational hands-on activities including writing computer programs, building rockets and robots, and working in groups to design a planetary mission.  We will provide all materials. No previous experience is necessary for any activity.
