Artemis ROADS II (2023-2024)
Artemis ROADS II National Student Challenge

For the 2023–2024 challenge, we developed eight Mission Objectives (MO) inspired by the NASA Artemis program. Teams documented their progress in a Mission Development Log and submitted materials to NESSP for team recognition. Artemis ROADS II is an excellent team activity for in-class projects, robotics, programming, clubs, Scout troops, and other community organizations.
STEM Concepts
All activities aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and helped students build skills in:
- Earth and space science (Earth–Moon system)
- Life science and plant growth for space habitats
- Engineering and design (rockets, habitats, and systems)
- Robotics and basic programming
- Scientific modeling and hands-on testing
- Exploring NASA STEM careers
- Teamwork, communication, and documentation
Challenge Activities
Teams completed a sequence of Artemis-themed mission tasks:
- Document their work in Science & Engineering Notebooks and a Mission Development Log
- Design a team mission patch
- Design and test a water bottle rocket and crew capsule
- Design and build a lunar habitat on the Moon
- Investigate ways plants could grow on the Moon
- Plan Earth observations from the Moon.
- Build and program a rover to deliver supplies using color sensing
- Share their final mission results through the MDL and presentations
